We enjoyed walking around the base in the mornings and found some interesting sites. For example, there was a marker indicating where one of the Japanese aircrafts crashed.
We drove up the island to the North Shore on Friday. We stopped first at the Macadamia Nut Farm and sampled their coffee, tried their seasoned macadamia nuts, and purchased some for our souvenirs. We also were able to see part of their gardens - and Nico (Dillon's son) chased the chickens!
We made a stop at an cliff side overlook. The pictures won't do it justice, but it was breathtaking! The surf was quite large that day, and was breaking against the rocks. The waters were a beautiful turquoise color.
Our next stop was at Turtle Bay - it's a resort that is featured quite often in movies...for good reason. It has it's own private beach, a small peninsula that sneaks out into the ocean and a beautiful location on The North Shore.
After a lunch at Ted's Bakery (yummy pies and garlic shrimp) we made a few stops along the North Shore beaches. They have an installment of swings along the beaches which we took advantage of!
We saw some surfers out in the waves, but it was a pretty intense surf which prevented many of them from attempting anything impressive
We made a quick stop at a nature preserve that had even more beautiful scenery
Then we made our way to Haleiwa, and some fantastic Shave Ice. This stuff was even better than what we had at the swap meet! We were originally going to go to Matsumoto which was recommended to us...but then we met a local who sent us elsewhere...thank goodness she did!
Our last stop was the Dole Plantation. We wandered the grounds a little bit, looked through their gift shops and sampled the Pineapple Whip Ice Cream (it was amazing).
